Our school is considered:

In five words or less, describe your prototype

Re-designing flexible spaces for inclusion.

Insert an image that showcases your prototype.

How might we?:

How might we re-design / re-purpose flexible spaces to support both academic and social-emotional needs?

Describe the prototype(s) your school will focus on. Get creative. Be sure to describe the various approaches staff will take, what you will keep your eye on and how staff plan to document their results.

What will you try?

  • Leverage expertise of half-time Design Coach (teacher) and our Child Development Advisor (both part of our Learning Support department) to imagine, design and prototype different configurations, furnishings and procedures of new spaces.

  • Spaces to be re-named:

-One space to primarily support Middle Levels students during academic time

-Second space available for self-accessed "breaks" or time to reset, to re-focus mentally and return to class with improved wellness. (Not a room for consequences or "big feelings")

What will you keep your eye on; what will occur that will give you insight?

  • Who is accessing the space initially?  How is the earliest prototype meeting needs and where are refinements necessary?

  • What do the teachers feel would benefit themselves and their students?

  • What do the students feel are their needs for an alternate space?

  • How are the spaces most effectively staffed / supervised?

  • Is what we create sustainable?

How will you document your results?

  • Data collection of students accessing spaces

  • Who?  How often? For what purpose(s)?

  • What are the anecdotal comments of users (both students and staff)  Capture both the positive and critical comments.  What would a Wish List have on it?

  • Capture designs and re-designs via photographs

  • Possible end project to Make Learning Visible – videocast of end results
